Brown Mogotsi’s case postponed to August

The pre-trial hearing of North West businessman, Brown Mogotsi has been postponed to 3 August.

Mogotsi appeared in court on Wednesday and he will remain in custody. He faces charges of perjury and defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

According to the State, Mogotsi fired 11 rounds into his own vehicle before falsely reporting to police that unknown gunmen had ambushed him while he was driving through Vosloorus.

Investigators recovered 11 spent cartridge casings at the scene.

State prosecutor Thami Mpekana, told the court that the State had handed over a digital copy of video footage that allegedly shows eyewitnesses seeing Mogotsi shoot at his own vehicle before falsely claiming that he had survived an assassination attempt.

“The copies of the footage have now been given to the defence and the defence have indicated that they would want to consult further.”

“I would therefore request that the matter be remanded for that purpose.”

Mogotsi was arrested on 15 May after concluding his testimony at the Madlanga Commission.

He was denied bail and labelled a flight risk due to contradictions over his home address. His second attempt at bail was also denied on the 29th of June.
